How Have Maruti Suzuki's CO₂ Emissions Per Vehicle Evolved Over the Last Decade, And What Simple Process Improvements Could Further Reduce Them?

Abstract
The paper presents the findings of the research that focused on the development of energy use per vehicle and CO₂ emissions per vehicle at Maruti Suzuki over the past fiscal years and how the movements were influenced. A longitudinal panel was created based on company reporting and normalised by output and the data was analysed with quantitative time trend and attribution data as well as qualitative time line coding which traced inflections to paint and utility process improvements, solar adoption (stepwise), model composition change, pandemic throughput shocks, pandemic carbon electricity intensity change, and so on. The results show undoubted efficiency improvement at the plant level and volatile emissions results. On the one hand, the measures on paint, utilities, and renewable purchase led to operational performance enhancement and demonstrated the organisation's ability to carry out intensity decreases. Conversely, slower rates of CO₂ per vehicle were limited by heavier product mix, reduced utilisation in disruptions, and higher grid emission factors.
