The Effects of Improvisational Music Therapy on Social Communication and Emotional Expression in Autistic Children

Many autistic individuals struggle with sensory sensitivities and social reciprocity. Traditional interventions such as ABA and JASPER often result in negative outcomes, causing anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. This study examines the influence of Improvisational Music Therapy (IMT) on the social communication and emotional expression of autistic children aged 3-17 using thematic analysis. Four key overarching themes emerged: social communication and reciprocity, emotional expression and regulation, cognitive and language development, and parent–child synchrony. Improved social communication was the most recurring outcome, including enhanced joint attention, turn-taking, and increased use of verbal and nonverbal communicative behaviours. IMT creates opportunities for interaction and builds reciprocity across diverse populations.
