Abstract
Startup ecosystems do not develop in the same way across countries. Market size, consumer spending, labour conditions, and regulation all shape how startups grow. They also affect whether those startups can become profitable. This paper compares India and the United Arab Emirates to examine how these differences influence the scalability and profitability of startup business models. It looks at factors such as purchasing power, regulation, and internal performance indicators like unit economics. Companies such as Zomato and Paytm in India, and Talabat and Careem in the UAE, are used to show how startups operate in very different environments. The comparison suggests that Indian startups rely more on scale and cost efficiency to grow in price-sensitive markets. In contrast, UAE-based startups benefit from stronger consumer spending and higher revenue per transaction. Overall, startup success depends on how well a business model fits its environment.
