Review of Comparison of Growth Models in Vannamei Shrimp and Their Usage

Abstract

This paper contains a review of the use of several growth pattern models including von Bertalanffy, Gompertz, and Logistic in vannamei shrimp culture. Vannamei shrimp have several advantages including responsiveness to feed, resistance to disease, relatively faster growth, higher survival rates, and ability to live at high stocking densities with maintenance time of about 90-100 days per cycle. The use of growth curve models can measure optimization of growth and determine the right time to harvest. Based on the review, partial harvest can provide maximum biomass and the von Bertalanffy growth pattern model is the most suitable model for estimation because it has a small error rate, especially when combined with the Bayesian hierarchical model approach.
