Harnessing the use of Day lighting as a means for Energy saving techniques in Art Museums

Abstract

Museums are places of natural and human creativity and history. This study identifies and discusses different daylighting systems and analyzes existing museums to understand how daylighting is harnessed in their internal spaces. Research methodology includes case studies and literature reviews of the Broad Art Museum in California and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Findings reveal that various natural lighting techniques—including clerestory windows, luminous ceilings, cove luminaires, light shelves, and skylights—play major roles in reducing energy consumption while improving artifact visibility and preservation. Proper daylighting design can save up to 75% of energy used for artificial lighting without compromising artifact protection or visitor comfort.
