Female Headed Households Participation in Small Scale Farming and Food Security in Semi-Arid Region Tanzania

Female headed households engaged in small scale farming in semi-arid regions face significant food insecurity challenges. This study examined 30 female headed households in Chololo village, Kikombo ward, Dodoma Municipality, Tanzania. Using household surveys, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews, the research revealed that limited land ownership (maximum 2 hectares), lack of male support, insufficient off-farm income, and household burden contribute to chronic food insecurity. Most female headed households can only sustain their families for 3-6 months from harvest. The study recommends targeted government support including secure land access and credit provision to address vulnerability in this population.
