Do They Make Sense Anywhere Else? Urban Theories in Action: Bahir Dar City in Focus

This study examines urbanization and urbanism in Bahir Dar city, Ethiopia through the lens of urban sociological theories. Using mixed methods including interviews, focus group discussions, observation, and surveys with 280 households, the research explores how classical urban theories apply in the African context. The study reveals that Bahir Dar exhibits a dual character combining cosmopolitanism with strong community ties rooted in kinship, religion, and traditional social organizations. While Western urban theories emphasize impersonality and alienation, Bahir Dar's urban life is characterized by persistent gemeinschaft features alongside emerging cosmopolitan elements. Informal economy, religious diversity, and political economy factors shape the city's spatial development and social inequalities.
