Developing Flood-Resistant Crop Varieties Through Biotechnology: A Sustainable Approach to Food Security in Pakistan's Floodplains

Abstract
The floodplains of Pakistan face an ever-present danger of flooding as a consequence of global warming, affecting agricultural productivity and national food security. Rice is an extremely significant crop and source of employment in flood-prone regions, yet it is particularly susceptible to prolonged submergence. This study investigates the potential of biotechnology as a climate-adaptive strategy for developing flood-resistant crop varieties through bioinformatics-based analysis. Flood-tolerant genes within the SUB1 locus (SUB1A, SUB1B, and SUB1C) have been examined using publicly available protein databases. Comparative analysis revealed that SUB1A has played a specialised role in submergence tolerance, unlike the structurally similar but functionally less characterised SUB1B and SUB1C. The traditional rice landrace FR13A was identified as a valuable genetic reservoir for flood-tolerance traits. This study demonstrates how bioinformatics can support the identification of significant stress-tolerance genes and highlights the relevance of flood-resistant rice varieties for strengthening food security in Pakistan's flood-affected regions.
