Degraded Documents Data Preservation Using Digital Image Processing

Abstract

Documents can suffer degradation problems, especially historical documents, including strains, background variations, uneven illumination, and ink seepage. A hybrid binarization approach combining global and local thresholding techniques is proposed to improve document quality. The method applies global thresholding first, then re-applies it to areas still containing noise, achieving better adaptability while avoiding computational costs of full local thresholding. This technique effectively removes background noise and improves legibility of degraded images.
