Abstract

Cryopreservation is a well-established process used in the medical field to preserve cells, tissues, organs, and biological samples at ultra-low temperatures. The term derives from "cryo" (ice cold/frozen) and "preservation" (keeping safe or alive). Cryopreservation maintains samples at -196°C using liquid nitrogen without compromising cell viability. However, ice crystal formation, cell membrane disruption, and osmotic pressure changes—collectively termed cryoinjury—pose significant challenges. This paper explores cryopreservation techniques, cryoprotective agents, freezing methodologies, and clinical applications in organ transplantation, seed banking, and stem cell therapy.
