Advantage of Small Incision Cataract Surgery in Eyes with White Mature Cataract: A Hospital Based Study Experience as a Beginner

This hospital-based prospective study evaluated the safety and advantages of Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (MSICS) in 50 eyes with white mature cataracts, comparing 25 eyes treated with trypan blue dye (Group A) versus 25 without (Group B). Trypan blue enhanced visualization of the anterior capsule during continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis (CCC), achieving 85% success rate with the dye versus lower rates without. All patients receiving trypan blue achieved posterior chamber IOL placement in the capsular bag (100%), while the non-dye group had 85% in-bag placement, 10% sulcus placement, and 5% anterior chamber IOL. Postoperative corrected visual acuity of 6/18 or better at 6 weeks was achieved in 100% of Group A and 85% of Group B. MSICS proved safe, effective, and cost-efficient for white cataract management, particularly in economically disadvantaged populations, with trypan blue significantly reducing intraoperative and postoperative complications.
