Post Occupancy Evaluation: A More Effective Case Study Method

This study explores Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) as a more effective method for conducting case studies in architectural practice. Through a survey of 77 Nigerian architects with varying experience levels, the research reveals that while architects recognize the importance of case studies, they often approach them peripherally and without rigorous planning. The study demonstrates that POE—which combines building walk-throughs, observations, and occupant feedback—yields more comprehensive and actionable information than traditional case study methods. Results show that 54.5% of architects found visiting buildings and interacting with users to be the most effective case study approach. A detailed POE was conducted on Rivers State University's Central Library to validate the methodology. The findings recommend consciously integrating POE approaches into architectural education and practice to improve design comprehension, capture lessons learned, and develop more user-centered design solutions.
