Abstract

This study investigates whether money is the sole motivator for employees or if other factors contribute significantly to work motivation and performance. Through interviews with 38 employees across five Botswana industries and a review of existing motivational theories, the research reveals that while money is regarded as a high motivator, critical factors such as recognition, safety, feedback, teamwork, and self-esteem are equally important. The findings indicate a weak association between salary and job satisfaction, suggesting that monetary incentives alone are insufficient for building engaged workforces. The study recommends combining monetary rewards with non-monetary motivational strategies to enhance employee performance and organizational success.
