Diagnosis and Management of Typhoid Fever in Royal Prima Hospital Medan in 2019

Typhoid fever is an infectious disease caused by Salmonella typhi bacteria. While blood culture is the gold standard diagnostic test, it has limitations including high cost and long processing time. The Widal serological test is more affordable and faster but suffers from high false positive and negative rates. This study examined antibiotic management in pediatric typhoid fever cases at Royal Prima Hospital in 2019. Blood samples from 25 children were cultured and tested for antibiotic sensitivity using the Kirby-Bauer method. Results showed that six patients were resistant to ampicillin and erythromycin but sensitive to ciprofloxacin, amikacin, and chloramphenicol. Appropriate antibiotic selection and administration are critical for treating this endemic disease.
